Thanks for poiting that out. Rumelhart and others definitely figured out the math, but it was Hinton who gave the idea. At that point researchers were trying to mimic human brain and it was Hinton who came up with the idea that, instead of mimicking human brain for correct results, lets the machine make wrong prediction and use the correctional errors to improve the performance.
